Surya Bhedana

Surya Bhedana (Right Nostril Breathing) activates solar energy by inhaling through the right nostril only — a warming, energising classical pranayama.

  1. Starting Position

Sit comfortably in a meditative posture, ensuring your spine is straight and shoulders are relaxed. You may sit on a cushion or mat to enhance comfort. Close your eyes and take a few natural breaths to center yourself.

  2. Hand Placement (Vishnu Mudra)

Place your right thumb gently over your right nostril to close it. Use your ring finger or little finger to close your left nostril. Your index and middle fingers can rest lightly on your forehead. You can keep your left hand in the Jnana (Gyan) mudra position.

  3. Inhalation through the Right Nostril

Inhale deeply and slowly through your right nostril, filling your lungs with air. Keep your left nostril closed throughout the inhalation. Focus on a smooth, steady breath, allowing the air to energize your body.

  4. [Optional] Full Lungs Breath Retention

Once you have inhaled fully through the right nostril, close it gently with your right thumb. Retain the breath for a brief moment, holding the air in the body to build energy.

  5. Exhalation through the Left Nostril

Slowly and steadily exhale through the left nostril. Focus on a controlled, calm exhalation, ensuring the release of tension and stress from the body.

  6. Repeat the Cycle

Continue the cycle of inhaling through the right nostril, closing it, and exhaling through the left nostril. Repeat this process for a few minutes, maintaining a steady and calm rhythm with your breath.
